Madera’s team spent November 26 at tables bringing information
to shoppers at Town Center. We got permission to set up at opposite
sides of the center, with one table by MacDonald’s and another
right at the Safeway entrance. The plan was to cover both stations
from 10 AM to 4 PM to make it a day of high visibility, and twelve
volunteers (2 hours x 2 tables x 3 shifts) were ready to go. Unfortunately,
Nov. 26 ushered in the first big winter storm of the year, and the
unsheltered MacDonalds’ team was forced to shut down at noon.
The Safeway location, however, was fairly well-covered, and despite
the cold lasted most of the day — only when the wind blew the
rain in horizontally did the last team admit defeat.
The reception by the shoppers was wonderful. Several doctors, among
others, signed the petition, and the tablers found many people keen
to talk. It was such a fruitful location that we plan to reappear
there often. We were particularly pleased with how cooperative and
helpful the Town Center management and security guards were.

Steve Stein, a doctor at Oakland Children’s, was shopping
with his children and signed the petition with alacrity.
