The
event, held on March 30, marked the 231st day of the One Care
Now 365 day campaign to publicize the California Universal Health
Care Act, SB 840. It was held at the Vets Memorial Hall downtown
Santa Cruz, and was attended by a standing room only audience.
Carole Robertson, the chair of Health Care for All, Santa Cruz
County was the delightful host and moderator. The speakers, Lt.
Gov. Garamendi’s Health Care Specialist Nettie Hoge, Santa
Cruz County Supervisor Neal Coonerty, Santa Cruz County Treasurer
Fred Keeley, and Reverend Deborah Johnson of the Inner Light Ministries,
were each partly factual, partly personal, partly spiritual and
partly advice giving. They spelled out the intense need for the
single payer bill, SB 840, and talked about how it was to be financed.
They compared it with some of the plans currently showing up in
California.
The room was decorated by banners from a number of the organizations
and groups who support universal health care. Some of the banners
were professionally prepared, and others were drawn by the group's
constituents (adults and/or children). Publicity, before and after
the event, increased awareness and provided new information about
the importance of Senator Kuehl’s single-payer Bill.
The event was dedicated to the memory of Harriet Blue, HCA activist
and friend, who died this year.
