| On
Wednesday evening, April 11th, over eighty residents of Palo Alto
and nearby communities heard health care advocates discuss problems
with the current health care system in a forum held at the Unitarian
Universalist Church of Palo Alto.
The
free public forum, titled "Care Crisis: What Can You Do About
It?" featured Sara Rogers, Health Consultant for State Senator
Sheila Kuehl, and Greg Miller (RN), Board of Directors of the California
Nurses Association. Both gave extensive background information on
SB 840, the California Universal Healthcare Act, and described from
personal experiences how the Act can solve many problems with the
existing system of health care. Rich Watters of Health Care for
All California gave brief summaries of four other health care reform
proposals.
In
addition to a lively discussion of the need for reform, the audience
viewed the documentary "The Healthcare Solution: California
OneCare."
The
meeting was sponsored by Health Care for All California (San Francisco/Mid-Peninsula
Chapter) and League of Women Voters of Palo Alto. Co-sponsors included
the American Association of University Women (AAUW) - Palo Alto
Branch, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) - Midpeninsula Chapter,
Humanist Community, Adult Religious Education Committee of the Unitarian
Universalist Church, City of Palo Alto Human Relations Commission,
Palo Alto Council of PTAs, Sixth District (Santa Clara County) PTA,
and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - Peninsula
Branch.
