Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship Hall

1112 S.Bernardo Ave.

Showing of the DVD "The Healthcare Solution: California OneCare"
Followed by a panel of speakers who will explain why Senate Bill 840 (Kuehl)
is the only plan that will provide every Californian
with comprehensive, affordable and guaranteed health insurance coverage

The Sunnyvale OneCareNow event went very well, thanks to many people. We had about 52 attendees, many of whom are members of the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship where the event was held. They had purchased a very nice 50 inch TV Screen to show the DVD, "The Healthcare Solution: California OneCare." The DVD was easy to see with clear resolution. I decided to show the LWV version of the DVD because I feel that Jackie Jacobberger, the President of the California LWV, is so eloquent in defining the problem then stating the case that SB 840 is the only solution. She has a "call to arms" at the end to get folks to hold houseparties, rallies, forums, etc., to engage the public to pass SB 840.

The panel was outstanding:

  • Martha Beattie, San Jose/Santa Clara LWV, spoke after the DVD was shown and explained how the League, both nationally and locally, decides to support an issue. It was very informative. Martha sits on our Santa Clara County Single Payer Coalition and helped in the October OneCareNow event in San Jose.
  • Rosa Escamilla, CSEA, explained how their members, many of whom have little or no health coverage, suffer as a result. She brought the analyses that CSEA has done on many of the school districts to show the savings under SB 840, including Sunnyvale.
  • Mike Fischetti, Kaiser Santa Clara oncologist, spoke about how doctors aren't able to practice as they would like. He is forthright and addresses the crisis as being immoral.
  • Lia Cois, RN, a Kaiser Santa Clara maternal-child health nurse, was passionate about converting our system to that of France, Canada, and Italy, where she has lived in the past. She gave examples about care in those countries. She gave a pep talk call to action which was great.
  • Marla Scharf, a volunteer in the Unitarian-Universalist Legislative Ministry, spoke to the issue of this being a social justice issue and how we need to care for our fellow human beings. She's very spiritual and was appropriate to be the last speaker.

The Q&A that followed showed that the attendees were very engaged. Many of them had seen SiCKO which helped get folks interested in our campaign.
