Encino Couple Host ‘OneCareNow’
Screening & Discussion
A large group of Encino residents gathered at the home of Judith
and Arthur Hirshberg to view the new OneCareNow Campaign video,
“The Healthcare Solution: California OneCare” on Monday,
August 21, 2006.
Judith Hirshberg who recently ran for L.A. City Council (she lost
by less than a hundred votes), was pleased to support the campaign
for universal health insurance. “We are convinced that Senator
Kuehl’s bill is the answer to the healthcare crisis,”
she said, “and we are glad to help get out the word about
it.”
The event was organized by Health Care for All-San Fernando Valley
chapter Co-Director Sharon Stevens who is a personal friend of the
Hirshbergs. “It seemed like the perfect setting to get some
community leaders together and present all the facts about SB 840,”
said Sharon, referring to Senator Kuehl’s universal health
insurance bill. “This video does a terrific job of informing
anyone about the benefits of the bill and how it will work,”
she said.
Don Schroeder, the Emmy award-winning filmmaker who produced and
directed the video, was on hand to answer questions about SB 840
after the screening. “This was a group of informed and interested
people, but they were grateful to have all the facts about Senator
Kuehl’s health insurance plan,” Schroeder said. “They
appreciated the way the video covered all of the important details,
but they still had a lot of questions about how the new health insurance
would affect them individually. That’s why discussion sessions
following the video screening are so important,” he added.
Schroeder is also a Co-Director of HCA’s San Fernando Valley
chapter.
The Encino event was another in a series of daily events that are
taking place around the state to support the passage of Senator
Kuehl’s universal health insurance bill. “Some events
have been bigger,” Sharon Stevens said, “but this type
of event is important, too, because it gives people a chance to
ask questions about how they will be affected by the new legislation.”
Health Care for All-San Fernando volunteers were also at the event
to distribute OneCareNow literature and offer additional copies
of the video. “This is how a grassroots campaign works best,”
Schroeder said. “People getting together and sharing important
ideas that motivate others into action. Events like this need to
happen every day in California until we get health insurance for
all.”
