| San Pablo is facing the possible closure of its desperately
needed community hospital, which has recently filed for bankruptcy.
The community is very aware that uncompensated care provided to the
large numbers of uninsured people seeking care is a big part of the
problem. They know a solution is desperately needed, and that the
crisis is affecting them especially if the ER is lost!
On September 23 volunteers from HCA-Contra Costa staffed three
2 hour shifts at the Latino Heritage Festival, a very heavily attended
annual event in this city. They passed out flyers in English and
Spanish and got 58 petition signatures. The largely Latino attendees
were very enthusiastic on hearing about universal health care through
a single payer system. They expressed strong support, and told many
stories of the problems they or family members, and friends experience
in trying to secure timely health care in our broken system. Other
events are planned in San Pablo later this fall. Stay Tuned!
