FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RALLY PLANNED IN FAIRFAX FOR SINGLE-PAYER HEALTH CARE

On Thursday, September 21st, at 5:30 p.m. in Peri Park in Fairfax, the Marin Chapter of Health Care for All will hold a rally and march to educate the public and to demonstrate support for a publicly funded, universal (single-payer) health insurance system.

Andrew McGuire, the Executive Director of the statewide Health Care for All organization, will speak, as will Town Councilman Lew Tremaine, and Health Care for All - Marin Director Esther Wanning. Local activist David Glick will provide Spoken Word. Country gospel singers Skybrook and Maxwell, regular performers with Bread and Roses, will perform, and the award-winning OneCareNow singers, led by accordionist Ellen Karel, will lead the audience in their signature song “This Plan Is Your Plan.” The event will culminate in a sidewalk march around downtown Fairfax.

The rally is part of the statewide OneCareNow campaign, during which 365 events are being held – one each day – in 365 towns and cities across California. The final event will be in Los Angeles on August 12, 2007, followed a week later by a massive rally in Sacramento.

The legislature passed a single-payer health insurance plan last month – SB 840, authored by State Sen. Sheila Kuehl -- but Governor Schwarzenegger has indicted that he intends to veto it. The OneCareNow campaign will continue to advocate for such a system in coming months and years until one is enacted and signed into law.

On September 6, the Fairfax Town Council unanimously endorsed SB 840 and declared September 21 “Single-Payer Day in Fairfax.”
